Below is the same instruction as given in SmallMap program's Quick Help Section. You may find more help at SmallMap From the Perspective of the End Users and Frequently Asked Questions.
The Sample Town Web directory contains 130 listings. You may search its database by any text, Grid, Category, filter and sort the results. You can navigate by clicking on the index map or grid maps.
Switch among Index and Detailed Listings
From Category or Name Index, click "Detailed Listing" to display all items. Return to one of the indexes by clicking on ?.
Sort Listings
In detailed listing, click Category, Name or Grid at the top of the table to sort by that criteria.
At any time, detailed listing may be limited by various "criteria", such as the Find text. Modify the criteria for more or fewer listings.
See "Summary" and "Search Criteria" below the table for useful information.
Find Items; Refine Your Search
In the Find box, enter words to search for and click "Go". Clicking "Go" will find all items containing any of the words (a broader search). Clicking "And" will yield only listings that contain all the words (narrower, specific search).
Click << or >> around the Find box to wind through the last 20 search text.
Check any of the four "Find in" checkboxes above the table to specify the scope of search, whether to look under the data fields of Category/Subcategory, Name, Address, or All (including Grid and Description data fields if available.)
You can automatically update the Find text and listing table to track the latest item/name you have clicked to view. Check any of the boxes to "Track similar" Category, Subcategory, Grid, or Name. Leave all four "Track similar" boxes unchecked if you want to maintain current Find text and listing results.
You can limit the results to only category or name, which begin with a range of characters, such as "F-L".
Change "Max listing per page" to display more or fewer items per page.
Important: If you find too few listings, be sure to clear Find text and check "Find in" All check box.
View more data columns and hide map images
Click "Display more columns, but no map" under the table to hide map image. The table may display more data columns, such as addresses and emails, depending on Web Publisher design.
View a Category, Subcategory or Grid,
In Category Index listing, click on a category, subcategory, or grid to display detailed listings for that group. Click an alphabet at Alphabetic Index to view items which names start with that character.
View A Specific Name Card
In detailed listing, click a shop or client name to see its "name card", which may contain name, address, telephones, fax, emails, Website, description, category, grid info, and any images.
Click "Output" near the bottom right to output the contents of the name card to a new window for printing or saving.
Click the automatically generated, individualized, links to external map search & direction engines to view the external maps for this shop or client.
To hide name card, click "Hide name card" jus above the name card.
Navigate: By Index Map, Grid Maps, or Grid Buttons
Click on Index Map to zoom into a 9-grid map; table on the left will list shops in that grid.
On a 9-grid map, click a surrounding grid to navigate there. Navigation will stop one grid before the edge of the overall map, eg, stopping at B02 if you try to move to Grid A02.
When any grid is selected, SmallMap presents a set of 9 buttons, which you can click to navigate. After moving around, click on the red central button to refresh the table. Click to switch between listings of (1) the central grid, and (2) all 9 grids.
Miscellaneous
Click "Output" at the bottom of the table to output the contents of the table to a new window for printing or saving.
Click "Large Map" at the bottom of the table, or "L" at the upper-right corner of the map to view a non-interactive large map in a new window.
Click one of the Map Search Websites to access its home page to manually conduct map and direction search.
Click "Forget" cookie near the bottom of the left column to delete current search criteria and settings, and revert to default values. Click "View" cookie to see cookie details. See the SmallMap Online Manual for more explanatory notes. You can save the cookie for the session, 1 day, or 30 days.
