"Web Directory and Map Shareware for Small Communities"

SmallMap.com today releases SmallMap™, a Web-based shareware to help Web publishers present their community directory databases on the Web.

Any Web publisher who has compiled a database of hundreds, even a few thousand, of shops or members will be able to customize SmallMap to create an "instant yellowpage directory on the Web." The Web publisher may add any community map images as an option.

Visitors to the Website will be able to browse and sort through community listings, find text, name, address, and other descriptive information, save or print a "name card," as well as navigate around any map images.

Shareware for Small Communities

SmallMap is suitable for towns, parks, campuses, clubs, any cluster of businesses, and even for non-geographical listings (books, music, rental properties).

SmallMap is different from existing Web yellowpages and map direction Websites in that SmallMap is a much simpler Web application. For example, it has no highway navigating instruction.

However, SamllMap gives the Web publisher full control to focus locally on the community. For example, map images can be pictorial or schematic maps, or left out completely. The text-based program allows translation into any languages that the browser can handle.

Given full addresses, SmallMap can automatically generate individualized links to the established map and direction Websites.

Web publisher may insert text ads into SmallMap presentation to gain revenues.

Web publishers may download SmallMap from http://smallmap.com, modify it, and try this shareware without charge, provided they have read and agreed to the terms of SmallMap Software License Agreement at http://smallmap.com/terms.htm.

Within 90 days of publishing the customized SmallMap on a publicly accessible Website, the Web publisher must register with SmallMap.com or discontinue using SmallMap or any derivations on publicly accessible Website. Registration cost is US$100.

Innovation: A Dynamic HTML Program

This Web application is a cross-platform and cross-browser program. It runs in Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5+, Netscape® 4.X, Netscape 7+, Opera 7.54+, Mozilla, and Firefox browsers. JavaScript and cookie capability must be enabled, which is the default setting for most browsers in use today.

SmallMap is a dynamic HTML program based on the lowest common-denominator standards for all browsers, ie, HTML, Javascript, Document Object Model, and Cascading Style Sheet of the WWW Consortium (w3c.org) adopted by all browsers.

Web publishers will require only the minimal Web hosting package and server storage space because SmallMap is a light-weight, JavaScript-driven program, powered by the end user's browser. The Web publisher's server is relieved from much of the work load, and will not need PHP, Perl, other CGI, or any database programs. Further, the end users' browsers do not need Active-X, JAVA, Flash capability, or any plug-ins.
