Sample Town is a fictional community and a demonstration of how SmallMap is applied. It can be viewed here.

The Sample Town files also function as templates to help you customize SmallMap. See Manual Chapter 3. Downloading Template and Preparing Folders for details.

This file sampletown.zip is all you will need to start customizing SmallMap in the Windows operating system. The other links on this page provide additional download options.

The package sampletown.zip contains the following files:

1. sampletown folder and subfolders,
2. sampletown.xls, tabtoollocal.htm

The sampletown folder contains the dynamic HTML program (index.htm), a sample mini database text file (smallmap.js) and sample images. These files are listed on the next column.

The file sampletown.xls is a Windows Excel spreadsheet file to help you convert your database of names, categories, addresses, etc, into a format usable in the mini database, smallmap.js. See Manual Chapter 4. Customizing Your Mini Database "SmallMap.js" for details.

Alternatives to the Excel Spreadsheet Tool

You can use tabtool.htm as an alternative to sampletown.xls. This tool will also convert tabbed data block into JavaScript-formatted data array, for you to copy and paste into smallmap.js.
Note the downloadable zipped file contains a stripped-down version of the same called tabtoollocal.htm.

Web Publishers not using the Microsoft® Windows platform can right-click to download the template files below, as well as open the data formatting tool tabtool.htm (or tabtoollocal.htm).

You will not need the below files if you have downloaded smallmap.zip from the left column.

More About the Files

Smallmap.zip contains all the files outlined above, plus smallmap.xls and tabtoollocal.htm.

The first file index.htm is the core of the SmallMap program. It contains the codes, scripts, variables, and initialization values used in SmallMap. This is the main file to customize to suit your preferences. See Manual Chapter 5. Customizing the Main Program File "index.htm" for details.

The file smallmap.js is a required data file, initially populated with sample data. You can use tabtool.htm or smallmap.xls to convert your own data for use here. See Manual Chapter 4. Customizing Your Mini Database "SmallMap.js" for details.

Two Sample Websites

1. Sample Town - This is a fictitious town's directory and "map," a demonstration, and a template containing the latest SmallMap codes and scripts. To illustrate the capability to link to external map and direction Websites, we have input the addresses of actual public places under the Aquarium, Arboretum, and Museum categories. It uses single-grid, PNG-formatted, map images for zoomed-in view. Click for an alternative color scheme.

2. S2BJ - A real-life commercial area with a real map: Sungаi Duа and Bukit Jаmbul, Pеnаng, MaIаysiа. It makes use of 3-grid-by-3-grid GIF subdivided map images.
