Instant Web Directory For Local Search

SmallMap™ helps small businesses or independent Web publishers present your local community's directory databases and maps on the Web in a way that complements the major search engines and your clients' existing Web sites.

SmallMap complements the major search engines' local search by highlighting your community in a centralized Web location, in a standard format you control. You can also include clients who have no Websites (by listing their phones, fax, images, etc), as well as any uniquely-designed local maps.

If you have already complied a small database/spreadsheet listing local businesses and services, you can turn SmallMap into your instant yellowpages directory program. This saves hours of Web development costs.

Example of a community map

Using the same database, you can additionally create a plain HTML page acting as a centralized, index page, so that major search engines can easily find, index, and cache all the Websites and non-Web contacts of your local businesses and services.

Despite the name "SmallMap," map images are not essential. The focus of this software is on presenting community database, local, or neighborhood businesses and services.

For Small Communities

SmallMap is suitable for small community database meant for public viewing. It can comfortably manage over 100 map grids, and 1000 listings. SmallMap can manage a few thousand more listings depending on your server speed and user bandwidth.

It can be customized for towns, parks, campuses, clubs, any cluster of names, and even non-geographical articles, such as books or media.

SmallMap is different from yellowpages and map direction Websites. It is a much simpler Web application, without route direction, for example.

But SmallMap gives the Web publisher full control to focus locally within your own community. You can use any type of pictorial or schematic maps, or leave out the map completely.

Visitors to your Website will be able to view and sort the directory data by Category Index, Name Index, Grid, and individual listings.

Users can look up words under category/ subcategory, grid, name, address and descriptive information. Specific details of each listing can be presented as a name card, supplemented by two 300px-width images if available.

Given enough address details, SmallMap can automatically create individualized links to the major map and direction Websites.

A Dynamic HTML Program

SmallMap is an innovative dynamic HTML Web application that runs on the end user's browser.

SmallMap is based on the lowest common denominators for all browsers, ie, HTML, Javascript (ECMAscript), Document Object Model, and Cascading Style Sheet of the WWW Consortium standards adopted by all browsers.

This Web application runs in Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5+, Netscape® 4.X, Netscape 7+, Opera 7.54+, Mozilla, and Firefox. Javascript and cookie capability must be switched on, which is the default setting for most browsers in use today.

The Web publisher's server is relieved from much of the work load. You will not need PHP, Perl, other CGI, or any database programs. Further, the end users' browsers do not need Active-X, JAVA, or Flash capability.

Because Dynamic HTML is text-based and transparent, Web publishers can be assured that SmallMap is open to scrutiny, and does not operate like a typical "black-box" shareware. Its transparent nature also means Web publisher may receive advice from its own community to improve and modify SmallMap to maximize its usefulness.

But Web Publisher must also avoid placing confidential information inside the "smallmap.js" data file because JavaScript files are text files and easily viewable on the Internet.

For more discussion on the dynamic HTML characteristics, see What a Web Publisher Needs Before Getting Started.

You must read and agree to the terms of use of terms before making any modification to SmallMap.

In the HTML body section of the SmallMap program, we suggest two positions where you may try inserting Web ad code block to generate ad revenues for
yourself.

Two Sample Websites

1. Sample Town - This is a fictitious town's directory and "map," a demonstration, and a template containing the latest SmallMap codes and scripts. To illustrate the capability to link to external map and direction Websites, we have input the addresses of actual public places under the Aquarium, Arboretum, and Museum categories. It uses single-grid, PNG-formatted, map images for zoomed-in view. Click for an alternative color scheme.

2. S2BJ - A real-life commercial area with a real map: Sungаi Duа and Bukit Jаmbul, Pеnаng, MaIаysiа. It makes use of 3-grid-by-3-grid GIF subdivided map images.
